18th Day of Christmas: Christmas Party

I didn't update Sunday night because we had our 2nd annual Ornament Exchange at Danielle & Andrew's, and when I got back I had to finish packing up because Monday morning we left for Georgia! I apologize for the delay, but no one seems to be reading this anyway so I don't think it really matters.

Regardless, here are some pictures from our party. 18 people squeezed in - it was so fun to see everyone! We were only missing Morgan and  the newly engaged couple (Nathan & Kelsey) - Sarah and Laura even made it back from Honduras and Spain, just in time. :) There was so much good food - actually way too much. The ornament exchange was fun, but not quite as eventful as last year. Hopefully next year there are more awesome or weird ones to fight over.

17th Day of Christmas: Presents

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. -Psalm 51:16-17
The big deal about Christmas is gift-giving. You get gifts for your mom and dad, significant other, siblings, friends, cousins, and people who cut your hair or babysit your kid. But what do we get for Jesus? He is God with us, eternal, holy, and mighty. The wise men brought him gold and frankincense and myrrh when he was born.

He is our Savior! What kind of present could possibly suffice to show our love for Him? Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. (v. 13-15) He doesn't want a burnt offering - a gift we buy out of our excess, within our budget, that is pretty good but not the best we could do. Jesus desires a broken and contrite heart. We have sinned against Him, and He has taken our place to cover up our sins so the Father will forgive us and shield us from His wrath.

This Christmas, give Jesus the gift of your broken and contrite heart - knowledgeable of all your sin, and thankful that He has taken it away.

16th Day of Christmas: Philadelphia

Okay, our trip to Philadelphia doesn't have that much to do with Christmas, but it is what we did the past two days. After a few months of raising support to work in the regional office outside Philly, we still hadn't seen the area! It was hard to envision our life for the next few years, let alone answer people's questions about what the area is like. We had a quick visit, which was perfect timing since Christmas is coming up and people are getting busier.

We saw five apartments in three towns, saw the office, got Whit a new phone, had a cheese steak in Philly, played two games of Settlers, went to the staff Christmas party, and got a tour of the area from our boss and a couple of our other co-workers. It was jam-packed, but we managed to squeeze everything in that we wanted to do!

We got lost driving to our first apartment showing because Whit's phone was on its last leg. It wouldn't pull up the GPS and we didn't have a map! I even called the wrong apartment complex for directions. We were 45 minutes late, as well as late to the second appointment, but Whit got his new phone that night after everything was over. He got the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and it was Best Buy's last one!! His day would not have ended as well without getting to replace his dying droid.

Out of the five apartments we saw, they were in three different towns and were all pretty comparable in one way or another. There was only one that we definitely ruled out because it was much worse than all the others. The rest were all pretty much 9/10, just being short of perfection in one of the following areas:  location, layout, having a washer/dryer, or distance from the office. Otherwise we loved everything about them! It will be a tough choice, but I'll love wherever we end up!

We felt like such tourists asking for a recommendation (how long is that word?!) for a good Philly cheese steak, realizing later that in Philly they are simply called "cheese steaks." Whoops. We actually went to Manayunk since it was closer, and dined at Chubby's. This pleased me greatly since it reminded me of Boy Meets World (which is in Philly, you know). We took 76, aka the "sure kill" and it took us a little under 40 minutes to go 10 miles. Pretty sweet, huh? Yeah the roads are not so great up there. In fact, the whole area looks incredibly different from anywhere I've been before due to the narrow roads. It will take awhile to get used to since everything is packed together so densely.

It was definitely different but we'll have everything we need, and much greater than that is that we already have a community of people we know who are excited for us to move up there. We felt so much more comfortable once we visited the office - we left for our next appointments feeling much more at home and welcome - like we were leaving a friend's house instead of just in the middle of an unfamiliar environment. We love everyone at the office and can't wait to move up there!! 28% come quickly! :)

15th Day of Christmas: Must-Watch Christmas Movies

Every year I HAVE to watch these movies. If I don't, it's just not right!

#1. The Grinch
This is my favorite Christmas movie. It's probably an unusual favorite to have, since it's not an old classic and it's not all sappy and sentimental. But the fact is true, I love it and can't go a Christmas without watching it! I love Jim Carrey, the humor, the storyline, the sets, and it's great acting overall. Plus, it kind of is a classic...I always read Dr. Seuss' big red book about the Grinch when I was little. Fa-who-dor-es....

#2. Home Alone
This is second, but a close second. This is THE Christmas classic. If you don't watch this every year, I don't know what you do instead. The movie is full of Kevin's entertaining adventures, with the heartwarming finale where he is reunited with his mom at last. And don't you just love how the scary man turns out to save the day? Macaulay Culkin, burglars, schemes, and family, this is a movie for the ages (and all ages). "Buzz, your girlfriend - woof!"

#3. The Holiday
Chick flick + the Christmas season. Can you think of a better movie combination? Hardly. Any girl should have this on her must-see list each winter. I love this one so much I always want to watch it twice. I never have; last year I planned to watch it twice but waited too long into the season where I didn't feel like watching it so closely together. This year I watched it in November so we'll see about a possibility of a repeat. It's long, but worth it for all the drama (crying and not-crying, wishy-washy guys, adorable romantic lines, and finding out he has two kids).

#4. A Charlie Brown Christmas
The most classic one on the list. Charles Schultz really knew how to make a sweet cartoon that brings together your family for the holidays. It's great to see the gang together in feature film, instead of on a 2-D piece of paper. You get to hear the best soundtrack, feel sorry for Charlie Brown, and who could forget that sad little tree. The best part? Linus' Christmas speech where he shares the true meaning of Christmas. Way to go, little guy.

#5. Elf
The first time I saw it I honestly didn't think it was that funny. Fortunately, it gets better every time! Will Ferrell is absolutely NOT one of my favorite actors, but I can get into his performance of a childish, goofy elf. He terrorizes everyone but only in an attempt to win them over with his big heart. I'm not a fan of the maple syrup jokes, but smiling? "Smiling's my favorite!"

Honorable Mentions (aka watch them if I have time):
6. The Polar Express - Loooove the book! And I met one of the CGI animators in a class in a high school - that Whit was also at!
7. Home Alone 2 - Forgot about this one until two years ago. Now we can't get enough. It's even quoteable throughout the year! "Ain't much better in here, kid!"
8.  I'll Be Home for Christmas - Saw it in the theaters. Yeah JTT! Watched it a couple years ago and he's it's still cute.
9. The Grinch cartoon version - Precious. And fun to make people take a quiz on!
10. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Not my style of humor, but Whit loves it, and it is pretty funny.
11. A Christmas Story - I've never watched it the whole way through, but there's no need to buy it either. Thank you TBS!

Movies I'd Like to See:
Arthur Christmas - A new possible favorite!
The Santa Clause - I'm buying it this year! It's been too long.
Miracle on 34th Street - Loved it as a child, but haven't seen it since
It's a Wonderful Life - Planning to see it with Whit's family for the annual Midnight showing at the Byrd!
Christmas With the Kranks - My mom's favorite. She laughed so hard in the theaters my brother & I didn't know if she was crazy or we were for not laughing. Also I'm reading the book again this year!
Muppet Christmas Carol - I heart Muppets.

Losers -
White Christmas - Bor-ing!
Four Christmases - Why would you make a Christmas movie with a sad ending?
Jingle All the Way - I thought I loved this movie...until I watched it again.

What's on your must-watch list?

14th Day of Christmas: Candy Cane Cake Balls

Christmas is getting close now! What better way to celebrate than by driving around looking at lights with your hubby, and then watching a Christmas movie eating some delectable peppermint treats?? I saw a picture of something that looked like these on Pinterest awhile ago and decided that they were peppermint cake balls, and that I would make them this Christmas. To aid me in the process, I found candy cane melting chocolate pieces at Michael's. It was harder to melt than just plain chocolate, it got kind of globby, but they turned out just fine.

Candy Cane Cake Balls
Ingredients:
White cake mix + the other things the recipe requires
White frosting
Candy cane chocolate coating, or dark peppermint chocolate coating (the bag I used was almost impossible to melt)
Candy cane pieces to sprinkle on top

Recipe: here

I have had a lot of cake ball variations, and this is by far my favorite!! If you love cake balls and peppermint, you will love these! Just try really hard not to eat the cake before you make them, the end result is worth it! ;)

13th Day of Christmas: Tacky Light Tour

I have always wanted to do Richmond's Tacky Light Tour. Whit and I have already had a couple of great Christmas dates - Christmas Town and Jazz Nativity, but when we knew we had the night off tonight, we spontaneously planned a tacky light tour. I suggested we go look at lights, but I was thinking just drive around in the neighborhoods near us. Whit looked up the addresses of the houses on the tacky light tour, and chose a route for us so that it wouldn't take too long. We saw 10 houses, ranging from pretty medium to very extreme. The route we took was perfect! We started off with some semi-lame houses and ended with the most spectacular house of lights I've seen thus far in my life. We thought it would be a contest to determine which one was the best, but the last house was by far the winner!

(We didn't count the very last one; we've already seen it because it's only a few houses away from ours! It used to be legendary for me because it was the most lights and crap I'd ever seen in one lawn! It has way less stuff this year, at least from what I remember, so in comparison to the others we saw tonight it was pretty good but not ridiculous.)

Here's the tour! I'll include the awards we gave each place.
#1 (no award)
#2 (no award)
#3 tasteful for a small area
#4 abnormal things, including zebra, st. bernard, and sports signs
#5 most stuff & well organized
bonus! all lights
#6 lights on the ground & spiky tree
#6
#7 discovery channel (had a teenage guy making weird sounds off to the side...not part of the scene at all but we thought it was weird/funny)
#8 highest volume of lights. as soon as we saw this from a distance we thought FOR SURE it would win because of the volume of lights (it's basically a cube of lights) but we hadn't seen the next one yet
haha people next to the winner: "what's the point --> ditto"
#9 guess the song
#9 lights in jars
#9 guest book & list of cities & countries people visited from (there were TWO full pages!!)
#9 - insane!!
#9 - need i say more? clearly the winner!!
#9 mistletoe
#9 rudolf
#9 mistletoe
#9 my favorite kind of lights
and the winner is....#9!! SOOO many things & lights but it all looked so beautiful because the colors matched & most of the decorations were handmade
#9 left side
#10 in our neighborhood! it had a drive through!
