17th Day of Christmas: Presents

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. -Psalm 51:16-17
The big deal about Christmas is gift-giving. You get gifts for your mom and dad, significant other, siblings, friends, cousins, and people who cut your hair or babysit your kid. But what do we get for Jesus? He is God with us, eternal, holy, and mighty. The wise men brought him gold and frankincense and myrrh when he was born.

He is our Savior! What kind of present could possibly suffice to show our love for Him? Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. (v. 13-15) He doesn't want a burnt offering - a gift we buy out of our excess, within our budget, that is pretty good but not the best we could do. Jesus desires a broken and contrite heart. We have sinned against Him, and He has taken our place to cover up our sins so the Father will forgive us and shield us from His wrath.

This Christmas, give Jesus the gift of your broken and contrite heart - knowledgeable of all your sin, and thankful that He has taken it away.
